It could go in ANY of these three directions:
1. He and the Patriots will finally agree on a contract and he will play a full season.
2. The Patriots will trade him.
3. Asante will sit out until Game 10. I see this as unlikely, but still possible.
VERY difficult to predict and I'm basing it on how the Patriots dealt with other notable players with similar recent contract issues. The Patriots got Richard Seymour's contract resolved and he started the season. When they dealt with Deion Branch's, they traded him.

I think he will sign the fanchise tag. He made I think 700k last year, and if he accepts the franchise tag, he will get a raise of 7 million or so, so it's a no brainer. I am not sold on him. I think he is a product of this defense. Interceptions do not tell the whole story of a player. Look at Champ Bailey. He did not have too many interceptions. Why? Because no one throws it to him, but if you based your opinion on stats, then you would think he is a worse player than Asante, which is obviously not true. I would like to see Asante play at this level for another year or so. I think the Pats are being smart. He is barely a top ten DB in my mind. If he sits out, the Pats will do what they always do, plug someone else in there and move on...just like they did when Branch left. I think Asante is very overrated right now.

Asante Samuel is not expected to sign a long-term extension with the Pats before Monday's deadline. In fact, he's quite likely to be a no-show when training camp begins later this month, according to the Boston Herald. The positive news is that a source close to Samuel said that while he wouldn't be suprised if the cornerback held out into the season, a more likely scenario would be ending his holdout early in camp so he'd be in shape for Week 1.
Our View
It appears the Pats' franchise player would rather be ready from the start, perform well, and seek a bigger contract next offseason.

Well Samuel has already gone on the record saying he is going to sit out until the 10th game of the season. Personally I hope he realizes the harm he is doing to his own career. He is sitting out the season that the Patriots are destined to return to the superbowl and is going to become the next Ty Law. He held out as well the last year we won the big game and then the Pats cut his @$$ when he tried to come back just to show him that they didn't need him. Samuel had one good year and suddenly thinks he's the next Deon Sanders. Personally I think they're better off without his attitude as the Patriots defense has never relied on one player, instead they opperrate as a whole unit.

He will not return until week 10.
Pats just f*c*ed him up by putting the franchise tag.
But they have enough talent to fill this gap. Ellis Hobbs can be as good as Asante and Eugene Wilson came to this league as a CB, so he could return to his former position.
Anyway, he's not training and he'll be out of shape when the season starts

We are talking about the Patriots. A team that takes "unknown players" and turns into stars. The Patriots have great scouts and where as other teams draft and sign off hype. The patriots pick up good players based on talent. Sante came out of UCF(a school that I graduated from). He was a good player that many teams looked over just because he did not go to a big college. The patriots saw this and picked him up. So do you think they will get bullied by him sitting out. NO. They will try to negotiate and if he doesn't sign; they will pick up someone who wants to play. Who doesn't want to play for a team that contends for the lombardi year in and year out. The patriots are a team who demand the best from their players. Look randy moss is gonna have a unbelievable year. Watch and see

Well, I think he's earned an extension after turning in a great 2006. This guy is a tremendous talent, and I don't even know where he came from. All I know is that the Pats better re-sign him, because if he leaves, they just lost one of the top 10 players at his position in my opinion. I think New England will keep playing hardball with him, but if it comes down to it, I think he will play.

Im Praying he swallows the pride and plays the whole year. *fingers crossed* i dont understand why he doesnt want a regular contract, the Patriots are right now the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl and shouldnt he be happy with that. Anyway the Patriots will *probably* win without him and even better with him

He and Lance Briggs will swallow thier pride and play the entire season. There is nothing to gain from sitting out. NO player really wants to be sitting on the shelf.
