whats up with the end of this story i mean whats up with the baker's phone call and weiss couple eating with him! seriously the end of this story really confused me

In my opinion, the baker was generally annoyed at people that screwed him financially by ordering specially made custom cakes and then not picking them up or paying for them, and so he decided to "take it out" on a customer who he thought did the same thing... unfortunately, he picked a couple who had a pretty damn good heartbreaking reason for having not picked up the custom-made cake... and so at the end, they seem to make a certain peace with each other...

I think the baker represents the tendency to jump to conclusions... he is so self-obsessed, it never occured to him that someone might have had a tragedy. He thought people were just inconsiderate of him and his business...

I love Raymond Carver.

:S Goodness, I haven't read that one but Raymond Carver always confused me... he has something that could work as an ending, but then he carries on anyway and leaves the ending ambiguous... i just know that raymond carver was always big about changes and epihanies etc...
