Determining Latitude And Longitude

Latitude and longitude ARE co-ordinates. On Earth latitude can be measured by the angle of the north star above the horizon, longitude requires precise clocks and a great deal of record keeping.

Longitude does need a good clock. Every 1 second error in time will make your longitude error about 1467 feet (if you at at the equator). But you don't need to wait for sunset, any time will do. You just need to be able to see and identify some astronomical body that's in the navigation almanac: sun, moon, planets, or bright stars.

The almanac tells you where the body is in the sky, at the time you want, relative to the center of the earth. If you see it at that spot, then you're at the same longitude as the object. If you see it somewhere else, then the almanac equations will show you how to figure out your longitude.

We have to wait to certain times of day. This is how mariners used to navigate:

Note the day. Note the angle to the sun at it's highest point - noon. Check your almanac as to the what it should be for latitudes. Or, at night, note the angle to Polaris, the North star.
This will tell you your latitude.

Longitude is tough. You need a really good clock. You know how big the world is, and you mark the exact moment of sunset. You do some math, and this will tell you where you are on the globe.
