I have a 60 watt bulb for my red ear slider. I have a screen top so he can't touch it. The light is about 4 inches from him. Is that too close?

Yes...the bulb should be a little further away from his basking rock. My turtle's light is about 6 to 8 inches from her rock. Too much further away and he would get too cold. If it is an adult turtle, the light could be a foot away or more, but closer for babies. Hope this helps!

If the basking site is kept at about 90F, and the water temps are running about 75-80F in the day, then it is good.

Plain light bulbs, however, are really not an effective way to go. If you are trying to heat the water, they are not strong enough, they barely work to heat the basking site.

Give the site http://www.austinsturtlepage.com a try. Under their articles section, they talk about light, as well as a lot of other useful things a keeper needs to know to have happy turtles!
