Alrighty people. Just trying to do my summer homework packet, and I'm experiencing major brain fartage. It would seem as though I should just add 20 and 5 in the parenthesis, but in the back of my brain, I'm thinking I should dustribute the 'negative one', like 20-1(20+5) to make it 20-20-5. Please help me!

E=exponents
M=multiplication
D=division
A=addition
S=subtraction
That is the order of operations under all curcumstances. you want to do the (20-5) first because it is in parenthesis, You then have 20 - 25. then you subtract and get a -5.

Always sort out parens first.
20-(20+5)=
20-25=
-5

this is easy follow these steps
1. add the 20 and the 5 toghther to make 25
2. now subtract 25 from 20 and you get -5

Your first though was correct -- work out the parentheses as a separate unit first -- so your answer is -5.
