I'm certainly not looking for anything that surpasses the original, but something that comes close would be nice. Any suggestions?

There are hundreds of Beatle covers out there, but the Fabs were so innovative and unique that most covers come of as pale and derivative.

Having said that there are a few that have stood the test of time and maintain some real originality, and a few obscure but interesting versions:

With a Little Help From My Friends -- Joe Cocker
She Came in Through The Bathroom Window -- Joe Cocker
Here Comes the Sun -- Richie Havens
Helter Skelter -- U2
Taxman - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Eleanor Rigby - Ray Charles
Happiness is a Warm Gun -- The Breeders
Two of Us -- Michael Penn and Aimee Mann
Dear Prudence -- Siouxsie and the Banshees
One After 909 -- Willie Nelson
I'm Looking Through You -- Steve Earle

The best cover I've ever heard by any band of any band happens to be Stevie Wonder covering the Beatles. He did We Can Work It Out and it was just phenominal. He really did a great job of puting his touch on it while honoring the original.

No, actually I haven't, however, I do like Green Days cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero, much better than John's original version. That is a rarity. I usually don't care for remakes of other peoples songs.

Very few. Eddie Vedder did a great cover of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away".

While not *technically* a Beatles cover, Kevin Spacey did a great rendition of Lennon's "Mind Games" at a Lennon tribute a few years ago.

My personal favorite is Jaded Heart's version of Help! It's a completely different arrangement. You don't realize what the song is until the lyrics start. It's hard to find, but worth the effort.

and a classic :
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence

Oh, and not from the Beatles, but there is an excellent cover of Lennon's Imagine by A Perfect Circle, on the Emotive album :

Ah, and I forgot about that genius jazz cover of Yesterday, by Oscar Peterson.

Also, plenty jazz covers of Eleanor Rigby...
Stanley Jordan there :

There's also a better (imo) jazz cover of that song by Christophe Godin and PJ Gaucher, but I cannot find it on youtube or radioblogclub or myspace...

I am not a huge fan of the concept of cover songs, but there was this one I always enjoyed. The group Godhead did an awesome version of Eleanor Rigby.

Yes, I have heard two good Beatles covers.

1. Yes - 'Every Little Thing'

2. The Score - 'Please Please Me'

Look for Yes (their first CD - Atlantic/Warner), and The Freakbeat Scene (DERAM/PolyGram). These cover versions both surpass the originals.
