Ankle edema is an increase of interstitial fluid (water) in the ankle area.

There's a wide range of causes... heart failure, problems with the lymphatic system, kidneys, varicose veins, DVT, etc. Your doctor may or may not be able to tell you what's causing it.

This is something that should be evaluated by a doctor. Though my guess is that you probably already have. Edema is not a term people tend to use in casual conversation.

swelling in any area is edema. caused by overweight or pregnancy.

Swollen ankles, through water retention. Drink more water to keep it circulating and keep as mobile as you possibly can to encourage good circulation
