So far, hybrid cars have proven to be very reliable and efficient in all areas...the inline 4 cylinder is powerful enough for this SUV and will get you decent gas mileage as well...others to look at would be the highlander hybrid or the prius hybrid...
at this point though, the extra cost of a hybrid barely outweighs the cost of gas which is saves you...so buying these will not save you much money yet...it is better for environment at this point and are fairly dependable vehicles....even the "fix or repair daily" ford has shown reliability so far...
good luck to you

The 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid is a nice vehicle.
The hybrid vehicle only comes with an I4 (the straight gasoline only version comes with an I4 or V6), but the fact that it is a hybrid and the combination of gasoline engine and electrical engine will make the vehicle accelerate similar to a V6. The I4 is an atkins cycle engine (as are many hybrid engines).
These hybrid SUVs were designed with the intension of saving fuel which is the reason for the I4. The vehicle comes in two forms a FWD (which comes with a $3000 tax credit) and AWD (I believe has a $2200 tax credit).
If you are looking purely from a hybrid stand point there are only 3 other SUV that are hybrids. The Saturn Vue comes in a hybrid form and is about the same size and sports a V6 gasoline-electric hybrid engine. (I believe the VUE uses Honda technology and possibly even a honda engine). The Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h which are built on the same platform.

My wife also wants a Ford Escape Hybrid, thus I have been doing a little research myself. We are a family who have been very loyal to both Ford and Honda. (Past: '87 Honda Accord LXi, '96 Ford Mustang GT, '99 Ford Explorer XLT, '00 Honda Accord LX. Currently: '04 Honda Odyssey EXL, and '04 Ford F150 FX4 Super Crew.) I like the looks of the '08 Escape Hybrid, but I hear that the power is somewhat lacking and that the actual MPG is less than advertised. We recently went and looked into the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and like size of the Toyota compared to the Escape (got to be able to fit 2 kids, dog and all our stuff.) Getting the Hybrid would make the environmentalists happier, but I am not quite sure if you would be saving as much money in the long run. Hopefully some of my babbling is helpful, as far as capacity, we are now considering the Honda Accord Hybrid. Would be nice if they would make an Expedition Hybrid... maybe someday. Good luck!

I think most hybirds only have a v4 but i could be wrong.
as far as size it all depends on the amount of room you need. I think the escape's area is about that of a large car so I went with the KIA Sorento.
I also looked at hybrids last year, when I looked they were about 8-10k more than regualars. I calculated my estimated gas usuage for 4 years (at 3.50/gal, way higher than price when I bought the suv) and it came out to be way less then the additional cost for the hybrid. I am planning on selling my suv in three-four years as you tend to be able to get more than you owe at that point.
that is my problem with hybrids right now, if you look at how much gas they save you (not much at all, especially on heavier suvs) it isnt worth the extra cost to get one. It really isnt helping your financial situation or the enviroment all that much.
flexfuels are nice but none were available in my area last november. They allow you to use higher amounts of ethanol, usually from corn fermentation, which is way cheaper than regular gas.

The Escape Hybrid is good, I would also recommend looking at a Ford Edge.

Look at all the specs, photo gallery, comparisons, and more here: http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/escapehybrid/
Here's consumer reports from people who own the Escape Hybrid: http://autos.yahoo.com/ford_escape_hybrid-reviews_user/;_ylt=Ahf6flBq1Jc9ToxgTwq9rFVHWcIF;_ylv=3
Glad you care about the enviroment enough to consider this vehicle.

FORD= Fix Or Repair Daily. Ford makes junk. Ford may be bankrupt within 5 years and the Escape is a POS anyway. Be safe and buy quality: Buy an import!!!
