Chessmaster 9000 or an earlier version of the Chessmaster series for PC or Mac is what I would suggest. You can play against ranked computer opponents or do various chess exercises to help improve your game. There are many, many different books out there to help you with chess theory overall or improving a specific area of your game (such as openings and mating), I recommend any of the Chessercizes books by Bruce Pandolfini. To practice, get involved in a chess club or just hop over to Yahoo games.

Search the internet and download the game Kasparov Chessmate. It is a game developed by Jamdat Mobile (creators of Lemonade Tycoon) and it includes a tutorial that shows not only the basics of the game but also the strategies (opening, defense, endgame) that are essential in becoming a great chess player.
Good luck in becoming a pro.

Take a look a Chessopolis online. http://www.chessopolis.com. This is a site of links to chess sites such as chess organizations that have clubs near where you live, chess lessons, and places to play online.

Whatever you do, avoid Yahoo chess like the plague. The servers crash and the help will send you doing hours of stuff when the problem is on their end.
I use http://www.freechess.org although that does not give you instruction.

I do not know of any free programs that would teach you about stategies, but chessmaster is a great program that allows you to play against different levels computer programs and it allows you to see possible moves and gives you hints and you can play various opening games.
