OK...My husband and I are re-doing out backyard. We removed 17...yes 17 over grown shrubs, and tilled the backyard. Now we need to get some new dirt, level it out and lay seed. The problem is that we keep ketting major weeds EVERYWHERE back there. What can I do do prevent them from coming up when we lay the seed? I have a 2 year old son and want to be able to play with him back there but there are just too many picky weeds. I was going to get Weed and Feed, but the bag said not to use it unless the lawn is 2 months old or more. Is there anything I can mix with th seed to get a nice grassy yard with no weeds?

Its the wrong time of year to plant grass seed. Wait until September. A few days before sowing grass, use Round Up on the weeds. You will need to cover the grass seed with a light layer of straw or peat moss and that will help prevent new weed seeds from taking hold. Next spring, when the grass is growing well, you can use weed and feed.

Your other option is to lay sod. More expensive, but you get instant lawn and your son can be playing on it within a week instead of waiting two months for the newly sprouted grass to be strong enough to take foot traffic.

Spray the weeds with round-up before you plant. It says for sure on the label how long you'd have to wait to plant, but I know it's not long, like a day or 2.
Penn Mulch is a seed accelerator paper mulch with starter fertilizer mixed in it. It is used by professionals & gives great results for any grass seed you choose.
Weeds are a constant problem. There is no way to completly get rid of them, especially the air born seeds that float around & land in your yard. You can only reduce the numbers & make the job easier by staying up with the battle.
I hope you & your son have a great time in your new green yard!

Are you putting something down over the seed, like hay or straw? This helps to keep the moisture level up. But if you use hay, it has weed seeds in it. Use straw instead. It is also too hot know if you are in the US. Grass seed should be planted in the spring or fall. Grass seed grows best in cooler weather. It will take hold in the heat, but it takes longer and ther heat is a real strain on your seedlings.

I just put down some of that weed covering in my front yard this past weekend because I was having to pull weeds every week. You can get it at any home imporvement store. You just unroll it and lay it down. Then put your dirt over it. In the places you want to plant something you just cut a hole in it. It is supposed to work really good, but the thing is, you have to replace it like every 10 years or so.
