I sort of understand what it means, but don't understand how someone could feel quixotic.

It means you are a legend in your own mind. Don Quixote was a nut job, but a noble nut job at that.

Quixotic is behaving foolishly impractical in the pursuit of ideals, especially marked by rash, lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action. The word comes from the character Don Quixote.

If you thought Jack (Leo DiCaprio) from Titanic was "sooooo dreamy", you were feeling quixotic.

if I were suddenly and impulsively chivalrous...like "As I saw the woman with her arms filled with packages struggle to open the door, I suddenly felt quixotic and rushed to her aid."
