Are you filling in your tax return, by any chance?!

Your calculation of dividing by 0.78 is not to get 22% of 5, but to find out what number you started with if 5 is left after 22% (tax, for instance) has been deducted from the original number.
You started with 6.41, 22% of 6.41 is 1.41, and deducting that left you 5.

Note that the 22% is of the original 6.41, and not of the 5 that you are left with.

5 * 1.22 adds on 22% of just the 5, not of 6.41; that's why you get a different answer.

Yes, this confuses a lot of people!

The answer you get is not 22% of 5, but rather 5 + (0.22*5), which you could put into the form you have in your question by factoring out 5 to get: 5 * (1 + .22) = 5*1.22.

Anyways, this answer is the same as 5 / .78 because they aren't the same problem, just do a little arithmetic and you will see the difference. Look:

5 / .78 = 5 / (78/100) = 5 * (100/78) = 5*1.28...

If you want 22% of 5 then it = 5 * .22 = 1.1

Dividing 5 by .78 (= 1 - .22) produces the number on which a 22% reduction results in 5.

Multiplying 5 by 1.22 = 6.1 represents what a 22% increase to 5 produces, and is the same as adding 22% of 5 to 5.

No, your statement is incorrect. When you times by 0.78 you get 78% of the original number. For example, 10 x 0.78 = 7.8. When you times by 1.22 you get 122%. For example, 10 x 1.22 = 12.2. If you want 22% of a number you must times by 0.22. For example, 10 x 0.22 = 2.2 which is 22%

why use 5 and not 78? so your question would be "when you divide a number say 78 by 0.78 to get 22% of 78......" - stop there - you don't get 22% of 78 but 22% of 100, so your premise is wrong from the outset

5 * 1.22 is not the correct way to calculate it. The correct way is 5 / 100 * 22 or 5 * 0.22. 5 * 1.22 = %122 of 5

No, you can't divide 5 by 0.78 to get its 22%
you can only multipy 0.22 by 5. That's it.

22% of 5 is .22*5
5/.78 is not 22% of 5
1.22*5 is 5+22% of 5 or 122% of 5
.78*5 is 22% off from 5
they are all different
