Because alcohol also cause damages to your brain & according to studies, the brain doesn't fully develop until your early 20's or so. Not only that, but teenagers are pretty immature ,& under the influence of alcohol, are sure to do even stupider stuff.
Sure, the drinking age here in the U.S. may be 21, but the driving age is 16 whereas in the Netherlands & most of Europe it is around 18. To get around here in the U.S., most people need to drive unless you live in a densely populated urban area where you have access to trains. There are also buses everywhere but sadly not everyone utilizes them.
With that being said, if both the drinking age & driving age both being at 16, there'd be even more deaths & accidents from immature & unresponsible teenagers. We already have enough problems with teenagers causing plenty of motor vehicle accidents here, do we need alcohol poisoning to be an even higher statistic as well?

It is 21 in some places. Sometimes, by "home rule" such as in other states, and college towns, it is 18. It may be less elsewhere. Statistics show it is better to have it older. Illinois lowered it to 18 around 1976. This caused so many problems that the age was raised a few years later, back to 21.

Well, the drinking age used to be 18, but these five teenage girls died in a car crash in the 80s I think and they slowly put the age up to 21.
The driver of the car was already dying before the crash due to alcohol poisoning.
So that's why. There must be other reasons, but I heard from a friend that the girls' death was a main reason.

come and visit my town in wales on a Saturday night then you might understand we have a very high rate of teen pregnancy and a high rate of fetal alcohol syndrome casualty here is full off teens on the weekend that have nearly killed their selves drinking more than they can handle, not to mention the amount with bloody noses after fights or broke legs from jumping of the local scaffolding it might seem funny when you are young but in hindsight you will see what a waste of future it really is i think 21 is an appropriate age . it is 18 here

Because the US is backwards on some things. The great country of personal freedom has this idea that legislation and not education is the best way to CONTROL its population and protect them from themselves.
