If the tire was puncture in the tread of the tire. Throw a good patch on and it, everything should be fine.
If the tire is ripped, Replace it!
If the puncture is in the sidewall or curve of the sidewall, Replace it!

The sidewalls take a lot of pressure!
You should never try and repair a sidewall that has been punctured!
It's unsafe to ride with a repaired sidewall!!!
Don't do it!

How much is your life worth? Less than the price of a new tire? Use your head and your wallet. If there is any question in your mind, and apparently there is, then get a new tire and play it safe. It is not worth risking your life at the worst time, when the stress is enough for the tire to go, and you find yourself in a life threatning position. Pay for a new tire and ride with peace of mind. There are enough things to worry about on a bike than if your tire is going to blow!

I agree with Bungee, but most motorcycle shops will tell you that if you get a bad puncture on a bike tyre, you should replace it; because bike tyres take a lot more strain than car tyres. Common sense should dictate that it may be OK to fix, say a nail hole, but a rip or tear should mean replacement.

REPLACE THE TIRE!!!

Here's why, imagine a screen door, if you stick a nail through the screen and pull it out. Did the screen return to its orginal shape? Do you think your tire will?

There are a lot of side stress put on a tire, and it's a matter of time before it will turn loose.

replace it. I have been wrenching and riding bikes for over 25 years and I have seen what a "fixed" tire can do to a person and his bike.
