This may sound naive of me but why can't she name her baby Billy? It is not William. It's Billy. I would name my child what I want to name my child. If she had never told you that she wanted these names, and you had never known, you would have just named them and dealt with it afterward. That is what I would do now.

So am I to assume you already have your baby and she does not? When is she having HER baby? If you named your child William, then you named him William. If you want to call him Liam, then call him Liam. Either way, she'll be the one that is copying, and odds are if you just keep calling your child what you are going to call him, she will likely not decide to do the same in the end, because it will make her look like a nut. It is probably just an idle threat.
That said, did you know she intended on naming her child Billy when you first named your boy? If so, then you were not being very considerate. Maybe she has a right to be mad... but if you've already named the kid, it's too late to cry over spilled milk. Call him what you like and move on!

I love the name Liam. If she's pregnant right now I can see why this would be a problem but if she's just dreaming then go for it. My sister-in-law actually changed her son's name a month after he was born. And my husband and his cousin (also neighbors) were born within 2 weeks of each other. They were both named Christopher because their parents both loved the name. Since his cousin was supposed to be born 2 weeks after my husband they agreed to call him by his middle name, Luke (even though he wound up being born a month early they still stuck with that). There are so many options... just don't go with "Willy"! Good luck and Congratulations!

Call your son whatever you want. It is not like he will be the only liam in the world anyway. What does it really matter if they have the same name? You should sit down and talk to her about it, explain to her that Liam is what you wanted to give your son as a nickname. Even if you don't tell her yourself, she will find out anyways. It is better if it is coming from you.

1. You have the right to name your child whatever you want, regardless of what your sister/friend/nect door neighboor planned on calling their future child.
2. Since you have used a name that your sister in law had 'claimed', it's probably best for family sanity that you let her know ASAP that you plan on also using the next name on her 'list', Liam, as your son's nickname.
I don't envy you!!!
Good luck!

Yes, definitely tell her and start referring to him as Liam right away. This will enable her to call her baby boy the name she had originally wanted anyway and should take a load off her mind.

It's none of your sister in law's business what you name your son and what his nickname will be. If you want to call him Liam, for heavens sake call him Liam. It sounds like she's got her nose in your business too much. And, who has a baby and names it Billy????
