I live in a condominimum complex and there are a lot of tall, beautiful oak trees around. Recently, a treecutter crew came by removing some lower branches off the trees, making them look "empty" and now you can see much more trunk then before. It's much uglier in my opinion.

Why did they remove those branches? They didn't seem to block anything or overhang anything they weren't dangereous branches at all!

doesn't help keep the trunks straight, because

1. These are old tall oaks that dont bend.

2. They removed branches that seemed to "balance" the trees weight.

branches that they cut weren't in anyone's window neither did it make grass easier to cut, because the branches are about 20 feel off the ground

In this case, it was probably just because somebody wanted more sunlight and the trees were blocking it. You say "they didn't seem to block anything" but trees always block sunlight from reaching somewhere at some time of day.

They can also interfere with poles and wires above ground.
If the branches are getting too near suspended cables (some of which can be a mere one storey off the ground if the building is taller than one storey), the council will take action and inform you that they are sending a crew around to trim back your trees. Well, the council where I live will, anyway.

Normally trees are either topped to keep them from blowing over or certain limbs are cut off that might potentially fall and cause damage. Some other reasons are for ease of mowing or if the limb has become rotten, etc. Another reason could be that the limbs were cut off to avoid getting into power lines. Sometimes limbs will be cut off because they are rubbing against a roof or siding and causing damage. It's hard to say. There may be no rhyme or reason. If it's a condominium complex somebody may have complained for no apparent reason and to deal with the complaint they lopped off a few limbs.

Possibly to let in light so grass will grow.
Or they intend to use the space under the trees for some kind of shady retreat.

maybe it's just a matter of normal tree-pruning to have a nice, healthier tree in the future.
