In both town you 'should' do a guided bus tour, either by using a good guidebook and the regular buses, or one of the hop-on hop-off ones.
These will stop at all places you 'must' see, with a normal bus you can just get off and catch the next one, (but be aware that the buses normally have a flat fee and unless you have a day ticket you pay per time you enter.)

Next, take half a day or a whole day just wandering through town, catch the atmosphere and see all those things most tourist miss in rushing around.
A good thing would be to take the museum list, sights list and/or cafe list in your guidebook and walk from one to an other, without hurrying, make sure you have the time to see also the little back streets or the parks.

A good guidebook is needed. May cost a little now, but will safe you a lot, even if just because you know where the cheaper places are.
I like the Lonely Planet series.

Remember that you do not have to see all, you will be back an other time, and do not overcrowd your schedule.

If you have the time, or patience, take a train out of town and see a little of the countryside.
You get a train ticket for the price of one lunch in town, (if not less) and you can get something to eat in a supermarket, or even better, at a local bakery shop.

Museums in London are free. Boat ride down Thames is relatively inexpensive. I highly recommend the Tower of London and the guided tour by a beef eater. Day trip to Stonehenge/Windsor Castle/Bath is definitely worth the money.

Of course, the eiffel tower, arc du triomphe, The Lourve.
