I've never been a Yankees fan, but I'm so rooting for A-Rod to stay healthy and get it done by the time he's 40.

Now than Ken Griffey Jr seems to be making a nice comeback after all those injury-ridden years in Cincinnati, I'd like to see him bow out with class and dignity . . . and retire with the all-time HR record. Time was, back in the mid-1990s with the Mariners, he was the most feared guy on the diamond. (and then his ex-teammate A-Rod would break it a few years later, if a-Rod's health held up.)

It's still early in his career, but I'd be very happy for Albert Pujols if he, too, passed Barry Bonds.

I think Griffey's chances are slim. He needs about 170 homers, and he's 37. He'll probably hit 40 this year (although it's not a sure thing), but the last time he hit 40 HRs in a season was in 2000. He'd basically need to hit 40 homers a year until he's 42.

ARod has a good chance, especially if he opts out of his deal and moves to a more hitter-friendly park. ARod only needs to hit 30 a year until he's 37 to get to 750 or so. Almost any place is better for a right-handed power hitter than Yankee Stadium. My guess is that ARod will break Bonds' record in 2011 or 2012.

Pujols and Cabrera are both young enough that they have a chance. Andruw Jones is probably the only other active player with any realistic chance of hitting over 750 homers, but even for him, it's an outside shot.

griffey would haveto have HUGE seasons for about 5 years for him to get there, he is at 587 now lets say bonds makes it to 780 thats still 193 HRs left for Jr...Jr is now 37 say he plays till he's 41 he'd need to average a little under 50 HRs a season...now i know hes ahead of where bonds was when bonds was 37 but Bonds also had a 73 home run season...This season is noted as griffey's resurgance he only has 24 home runs! I think you can take him out of the picture. A-Rod will break Bonds' record and Pujols will make a run at it too.

Right now it looks like Alex Rodriguez will need 7 to 8 healthy years to break the record. This will of course depend on how long Bonds continues to play. He has already said he will play next year to go for 3000 hits. He needs 98 as of now. He may end up with 780-790 HR's. After A-Rod all active players are to far away at their age to be considered serious contenders. Of course someone very young that only has just started hitting them could prove to be the guy, but it is too early to tell.

A-Rod will definitely pass Bonds when he turns 40.

To Baseballjohn48:
About A-Rod having a better chance to hit home runs in the new Yankee Stadium, it will still be the same as the current stadium. The field will still have the same dimensions.

Griffey is going to run out of years and/or health before he can reach the numbers Bonds will end with. A-Rod is another story, he has a real shot at 800 homeruns and it will be fun to watch him as he gets close. Most baseball fans will want him to pass Bonds and will cheer for him as he gets close.

A-Rod from the Yankees, at the rate he is hitting them this year, I say 5 to 6 years A-Rod will be the HR KING. And the new stadium will fit into his power alleys

At this point in his career A-Rod has averaged 44 homers per year, but seems to be averaging just over that over the last 6 years. If he hits 44 homers per year, he will get to 756 in less than 6 years, which would make him 38 or 39!
