No - Calgon is a play on Calcium Gone and it is just to prevent hardness scale in the machine. Clean water will wash clothes but I find detergent helps a lot.

No, they don't wash the clothes, they're added with your detergent in order to neutralise limescale. A build-up of limescale in the machine will shorten its life and limescale also makes the washing feel rougher. If you do use Calgon tablets or powder to soften the water, you will also find that you can use less detergent. Note that Calgon is really only necessary in hard water areas and any of the symptoms below can signify the presence of hard water:
Furred up kettle
You have unattractive white/brown stains on sinks, baths, toilet bowls and around the foundation of taps
Your showerheads are clogged
Soaps and detergents resist foaming
You have spots on your dishes or shower doors
By visiting the site below and entering your postcode, you can determine whether, or not, you live in a hard water area.

No but it does reduce the amount of detergent you will need.

Calgon Prevents Washing Machine Breakdowns due to Limescale Build-up. Calgon not only neutralises limescale in the water but prevents it from forming in the first place.

Calgon Water Softener is available in a range of products to suit your needs—Powder, Tablet and Gel. Add the recommended amount to every wash and at all temperatures to help prevent the buildup of limescale in your washing machine. Using Calgon also means you only have to use the minimum amount of detergent advised for washing in soft water, which may save you up to 25% on the amount of your detergents.
