The suzuki 3 cyl. was getting 40+ mpg depending on the model and accesories. Now that gas prices are going up why aren't the auto companies bringing the 3 cyl. back. The Geo Metro was very popular. I've seen commercials for 41 mpg city for the toyota and honda's but now they're priced as a hybrid. My 78 Ford Courier gets 30 mpg. I also see the larger vehicles now rated at 25 to 30 mpg. What the heck is going on with auto industry and mpg that we could have had years ago? And have had some pretty good ones in the past.

Are you ready? Its because a fuel efficient compact car is almost as expensive to build as a mid size car and yet Americans expect to pay almost nothing for them, so there is virtually no profit in it for the auto makers. An SUV is major profit for the Auto makers, but decreasing sales on those vehicles and increased demand for cars that have no profit margin have crippled american car makers.

And if you re-read your own comment you will notice that you disparage the price of a Hybrid, so unknowingly you contribute to the problem because you want to get a feul efficient car for the price of your 78 courier. My friend it just doesnt work that way unless you want China and Japan to take over the entire industry. Pay for the Hybrid and make up the money at the pump, and save the environment at the same time!

Besides being as expensive as small SUV's the Metro & Justy Just could not keep up when three people were inside and A/C was turned on. Modern Cars like the 36 mpg sentra 2.0 liter get's fuel milage with continious variable transmission (no Gears) keeps rpm's low. And if power is needed it can move very well. Engine management fuel injection systems new designed transmissions low rolling resistance tires and aerodynamics all make new cars a good choice plus safety air bags all over these cars these days.
