So I would go for LOVE (unconditional). That's the main ingredient, the one to start with.

To grow a friendship takes all of the elements already mentioned ...honesty , patience , trust as well as perseverance !

To make that friendship successful takes time ! Time to develop empathy & understanding !

I think the most essential ingredient would be "Understanding".

we are not always in the best of moods
we are not always going to be the most dependable

As a general rule, MY friends have to be Good-hearted and VERY Honest (like me), and different from me in anything else (specially taste) otherwise it would be boring if we share everything:
Take it from the naive point of view: I wouldn't want to compete with my friend for a girl, or fight for a t-shirt during the sale if we have the same taste.
