Easy! Security of Windows Vista based on the following - each starting program runs without administrative privilegies. Here is how you can apply this for WinXP: create LIMITED (not admin) account and use it (Control Panel -> User Accounts). When you'll be logged in as LIMITED user you will be protected as you would be on Windows Vista. Anyway, you should have at least two accounts on WinXP: administrator and limited. The first one is to install programs and modify settings, the second is for your work. The only one risk is installing programs which you don't trust using administrative account.

Yes, you can. Make sure your Microsoft Windows XP has "Service Pack 2" installed, you can download it here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx an anti-spyware from Microsoft, "Windows Defender" http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx and also "Windows Live OneCare" http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm which requires an annual payment or you can just use "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition" http://free.grisoft.com/
