You need to phone the Service Provider (o2, T-Mobile, Virgin etc.) first. If you have registered your phone with the Nokia website, you can recover the phone's ID. If you got the phone with a contract, your provider will already have your phone details. Without the ID, the service provider can only block the SIM Card but with the ID they can block the phone and make it useless as the phone cannot be unblocked. As for tracing it, forget it! The police will not go through the time and expense of investigating the loss and then obtaining a Court Order to track the phone as they can only pin point it to the nearest tranceiver (Mast). If you have insurance, you will have to report the loss to the Police before you can make a claim.

Cell phone companies aren't really able to do a reliable trace of your lost phone - it's frankly more resource-intensive than they can afford, and even the triangulation of cell towers or GPS can only narrow it down to a square mile at best and several square miles at worse. (This is why no one could get a good location of the unfortunate Kim family, even as they used the phone to "ping" the local towers.)

Just call your carrier. 1-800-888-7600 is Cingular's number from a landline or non-Cingular phone. Often, your carrier will suspend the phone so it can't be used if someone makes off with it. You'll have 30 days or so to recover or replace the phone. If it goes longer than that, your account will be cancelled and you'll have whatever charges come with that.

You didn't say where you think you lost it. Is there a chance
that it is in yours or a friends house? Try dialing the number
and see what happens. There is a chance that who ever
found it is trying to find a way to return it to you. It took me
three days to find the owner of a lost wallet. I was able to
by calling all her credit card companies to have them contact
her and give her my phone number. Good luck.
