This is extremely observing by you in such a comical way. It put a Major smile on my face. I also had a brief debate over it with my wife...example: the girl isn't pretty, and she isn't ugly. She is ordinary. Extra ordinary could go both ways, she is closer to ugly, or closer to pretty. Which direction does the ordinary go...Very fun observation on your part...luv-ed it.

It's using extra in the sense that it's above or over. For example, extracurricular activities are activities outside the curriculum, EVA is Extravehicular Activity - when an astronaut goes space walking outside the spacecraft. So extraordinary mean better, or above ordinary - something you wouldn't expect. it doesn't have to be a good thing, just unexpected - something can be extraordinarily bad, for example.

Extraordinary is a term that should not be used lightly. It is reserved for things or people who either have skills or are of a nature that is not "ordinary".
A case in point is Albert Eisenstein, or Captain Kirk. Each of these people had a vision and most of which came true. In cases of most of us, we have no extraordinary talents. However, there are few that do.
The term is not used loosely and those who have been gifted with that talent have been recognized for it.

Extraordinary literally means out of the usual course, and can also be used to mean exceptional, surprising, unusually great. Ordinary on the other hand means regular, normal, customary.
So no extraordinary doesn't mean crap!

"Extra" just means " outside, " so extraordinary means "outside of the ordinary". It could go either way, something might be extraordinarily good or extraordinarily bad.

i know, i have thought the very same thing ever since i had a teacher years ago who pronounced it 'extra-ordinary', as opposed to 'extrodinary', ie not pronouncing the 'a'. odd isnt it, as if it was extra ordinary then it is even more odinary than something thats just ordinary.

Well, because Extra in this case is more along the lines of 'Above' or 'Beyond' ordinary.

Sometimes looking at the opposite meaning of a word gives you an idea. Take "turbo-turd" for example. Yeah "boo" me, but it is under word-play, nest-ce pas? What productivity is a thumb that hangs in the same gravitational direction as it's owners genitalia?
