Just because neither of you have red hair, doesn't mean you don't carry the gene for it. Red hair is a recessive trait. Brown hair is a dominant trait. So both you and your husband have the recessive Red, and the dominant brown, obviously the dominant brown would dominate over the red giving you and the hub brown hair. Your son has both the recessive red hair genes that you and your husband contributed (two recessive genes are necessary for the trait to show), therefore giving him red hair. It's a 25% chance he can have red hair and a 75% chance of brown..

i think that more genes that 2 are involved. genes related to different proteins who are responsible for red hair. red and brown hair can be similar genetically. maybe if the son is still really young, his hair will get darker. i was blond till the age of 7. then my hair turnt into dark brown! and my parents were both dark- brown, bu each had a gene for blond hair. well, i didn't remain blond but my younger brother was born blond, and still is, although his hair got a bit darker the last 5 years. he's 15 now.

Red hair is recessive, meaning it could be part of the gene pool and not show for generations back. There are three genotypes, DD-dominant, dd-recessive, and Dd-heterozygous.

"red hair" is a characteristic inherited from parents (but in your case, may not be). the characteristics are found in DNA (found in chromosomes in the nucleus of any cell in your body). if you and your husband don't have red hair, the genes may be from your parents/ your husband's parents as the genes may "skip" a generation.
hope it helps.
