Yes, and it's not only teenagers. I know many adults who do the same thing, both men and women.

Well, what else do they have, really?
I do mean that as an honest response. You phrase it like a yes or no answer would work but there is much more to it than that.
If they are trying to fit in then they have to be of the right social order, of the right caste and have the right attitudes. They get told what these are by the advertising companies.
If they do not spend then they are ostracized and condemned to lower breeding opportunities, less acceptance socially which in turn means lower incomes and, again, reduced breeding opportunities.
Are you going to be able to change the world they live in?
I sincerely doubt it.

Not just teenagers. A lot of adults do that too. I think people have become too obsessed with they way they look.
