When going for a GYN exam the Dr will look at your vagina, there are so many different signs that can direct them to your health. The Dr will insert a speculum into your vagina to make the entrance larger so that she can see your cervix , then, she will take some cell samples that are basically painless, I would put it at the 'Oh' level. So many girls fear their first exam, then when its over they say, Is that IT? wow ! We woman have so many folds and skin down there that it is important that everything be checked out. Do not fear, its not a big deal to the Dr or nurse, it is very important though, that you try hard to relax your tummy. The Dr will insert a finger to make sure your ovaries are normal and that there are no deformities that need to be addressed. It only takes a few moments, so don't be afraid. If you have any fears of STD's, please tell the Dr, Remember, everything you say to her is private and your parents do not get to know, unless you say it is OK, that is where the HEPPA law comes in. You have to sign a paper stating who is going to be allowed to know. I suggest you tell the nurse, once in the exam room your wishes on that, as alot of moms fill out the forms.
Please, remember this is for your health and possibly your ability to have children later and most certainly for your life. We women do not run the risk of cancer of the cervix until we start having sex. Then, yearly exams and pap smears are so very important.
Good luck and don't worry

If you are going for an annual physical with your primary care physician or a gynecologist to do the annual exam there yes, they have to look inside your vagina and also feel the uterus and ovaries to make sure they are not abnormally shaped or sized. They also check to make sure there is nothing like a cyst on there that could be causing problems.
For someone that is having this done for the first time I would recommend a female physician because I find that it makes the woman more comfortable.

If it's a gynecologist, yes!! Well, not directly at it but in it. It also depends on the kind of check up and tests you will run. You shouldn't be alone in the room. A nurse or assistant is there too. It doesn't make things uncomfortable, it's actually more reassuring if your doctor is a man. You should go though. It'll be fine.

For a growth, inflammation or suspected foreign body they WILL HAVE to look at the vagina. It is their duty and if it is indicated, you should co-operate. They have seen it all, don't feel shy or nervous.
Good luck!
