and no, "i don't know" isn't a good answer for anything.

yes.. most of the time. Usually we are the one who makes it complicated. Its a good thing to make it complicated cause it shows that u actually think of that questions and try ur very best to find answer in all aspect of the questions.
In the end, u will come up with a simple answer which is also ur common sense
P/S : it wont apply to any technical or factual or science like questions k!

Sometimes, people just want to take the easy way out. That's why human's brains are so under utilised. Granted though, there are questions so difficult that the only answer may be "I don't know".

An important question requires an important answer. Instead of "I don't know", why not "I can't answer the question, but here's what I know"...
