Materialistic tendencies are natural to the mind that finds its expression in a materialistic world, but overwhelmingly materialistic pursuits are also adapted into a lifestyle in order to cloak or mask what could otherwise be visible in the eyes of a higher mind; we could, for instance, have intellectual and spiritual realisations raised to unbearable levels of sensitivity, after all this world is the strangest place for human being, if one comes to think about it. We could become too sensitive to the thoughts that this life is only temporary, and all is going to come to an end one day; or, we might lock ourselves into pure philosophical brooding about every thing in life, asking big questions and seeking ultimate answers. Then it is also possible that without our materialistic mindset, we might never find out how honest and sincere we are in life, and to one another, where matters of more materialistic nature and based upon principles self-interests, profit and gains in worldly possessions create a solid and clear frameworks of human interaction and collaboration, where there are opportunities to act purely rationally, objectively and normally without confusion caused by unclear high ideas, obscure philosophies and controversial ideologies. When are materialistic we understand each others motives better; we know what other want from us and what we have to offer, when we have definable and mutually understandable materialistic goal in view.

Oh, it the very basic thing ! Like a 'pre-loaded' operating system in a PC !
The basic instinct of survival has to naturally 'drive' us towards seeking materialistic comforts.
It is the urge to go a bit beyond (not avoiding, negating or abstaining) this basic instincts, that we have to deepen our perception to do something that is only possible to human beings, with the help of that unique gift of self-awareness.

We are materialistic because we only see the short term 'benefits' for being materialistic.

Because it is hard for us to decide upon the value of our lives so we substitute commodities. I suspect we were less materialistic in the past, but advertisers exploit our natural weakness for this rubbish. We spend all our lives thinking we are better than our neighbours cos we have a newer car then we die.

It is a part of our human nature to have possessions because possessions makes life easier to live. However, when humans live in a stable environment with plenty of resources our focus is put on obtaining things we want for our self not because we need them but because we either want them just to want or want them to make us look better in others eyes to compete socially through our ego. Having is not being materialistic. It is the ego driven desires we have to rely on material possessions to make us look a certain way in each others eyes that our focus is drawn to not needing but only wanting out of how others see us to be as we compete socially. We therefore take for granted what we need as we seek our temporary fixations to extinguish our desires while neglecting our long term happiness for short term gain which, perpetuates materialism and makes us fools.

We're living in a world, where we've seen people "succeed" and fulfil their ambitions due to fame, money and looking good. People that achieve, aren't seen or heard unless they have appeared in a movie or a photo shoot. Materialism is everywhere, and when something is everywhere and has such a great force its hard not to be influenced.
Human beings seek love, and unfortunately people who have good looks or lots of money - are easily adored or idolised. Rather than those with brains, or positive intentions. Human beings constantly need reassurance that they are loved - being popular, appeals naturally.
Thank You! :-)

It's a Culture thing. We feel that the more material things we have the more successful and happier we will be. But in the end its not how much we have, but how much we like ourselves, and as the old saying goes "Money & Posessions Can't buy happiness".

we become materialistic for a valid sense and/or a tangible proof in pursue of self achievement/ contentment/ fulfillment.
materialism exists innately in each of us, functions at its best in a comparative and competitive manner.
if materialism is placed in complete isolation and seclusion it becomes immeasurable and hence valueless.
we need it to live and survive.
