Have you ever herd of a Fruit Fly? California has had problems with these for years.

There are flies in California, as many people have already pointed out.

But, I lived in California for 28 years, and have lived in Oklahoma for the past five years, and I can see why you're asking the question!

When I sit outside in Oklahoma, it seems that mosquitos, gnats, ticks, no-see-ums, flies and chiggers abound. In California, you can go camping in the great outdoors and not be as annoyed by insects as I am when I'm sitting on my front porch in Oklahoma.

My theory is that due to agriculture, many parts of California were sprayed for years with insecticides. In addition, many areas of California are regularly burned off, mowed, etc. At my home in Oklahoma, my immediate yard is mowed, but there are acres of farmland nearby that are brush-hogged then allowed to grow. And there are square miles of wildlife management area nearby, most of which sits untouched by civilization. The locals love those areas for hunting and camping. Nature takes it's course there.

And part of nature's course is an abundance of insects, including flies.

One thing that I do miss about California is camping at high elevations. Even though those places are wild and untamed, the weather stays very cool throughout the year, so there isn't an annyoing amount of insects then and there, either.

I was born and raised in L.A. County.
I also spent two years in southern Alabama.
It rains one heck of a lot more in Al than L.A.
More rain, more vegetation, more vegetation more insects,
more insects more flies.
L.A. is basically a desert, and by comparison has hardly any vegetation, and few insects by comparison.
Yes there are flies in L.A. but not like back east where there are
a lot of green things.
