They were one of the best.
Their decline started with the retirement of class players like Alan Donald, Jondie Rhodes, De Villiers, etc.

Everyone will talk about Hansie Cronje and that is so true but before him Kepler Wessels captained South Africa and no team had a chance. South Africa has enough talent to be no 1 again but if halve off the world cup squad has to be black players that don´t deserve their place in the squad,South Africa will always see how other teams blow them away,cause other teams play with 11players and South Africa with 7

I agree that south africa had the best team in 1999 and under the captaincy of Hansie Cronje. They had world class players from number 1-11.
But before apartheid they beat Aus in Australia in a test series. However then politics came into the picture and that great team was suspended by the ICC

i agree with the second part of the last answer. South Africa had their best side in 1970-71, right before their ban for apartheid. They had Mike Proctor, the Pollocks Peter & Graham, Ali Bacher....so many great players, they would have dominated the world. It is one of the great shames of World Cricket that we never got to see how good this team would have been.

South Africa were at its best when players like Cronje,Rhodes,Donald etc.... were in their early days....They were energetic as well as had a very good sporting spirit....
And secondly when they had created a world record beating Australia's mammoth score of 434 in 2006....

During 1992 & 1999 World Cup they almost won both WC but due to their bad luck they have lost
