I'm 26 years old and unfortunaly lost my grasp of playing ball after a semester in college due to financial difficulties. Has anyone had any actual experience in open tryouts? I really wanted to get back into the game, I have played through out the years just nothing too too competitive. I looked into independent leagues but those are mostly back east. I live in southern Calif. I have noticed a lot of open tryouts have age restrictions as well, ie. max age 23. If you have the talent but are held back by age restrictions how else would you be able to go about being noticed? If anyone has any real helpful info that would be greatly appreciated. Any of those with negative answers need not post. And is it even fisable for me to hold on to the dream, or is whats done...done? Thank you for any help.

hmm, since you wont be getting looked at in college ball, the best way is to go to some open tryouts held by teams, but since you are 26 and i think the age cutoff for any tryout is 23, the best way i think is to contact the major league scouting bureau directly. possibly writing a letter to them. maybe send some video of yourself pitching or what not. major league scouting bureau doesnt have an email address, but they do have an address you can contact them by and send them a letter, video, etc. here is the address. you could also call them and speak with someone who could help you in your quest. i wish you the best of luck pursuing your dream.

I have to tell you what you don't want to hear, and that is at age 26 you are too old to start a career. let's say you do have the skills for a look from the scouts and they like what they see. By the time you signed a minor league contract and they placed you in a rookie league or somewhere else in their farm system you would be 27. best possible case is that you would move quickly through their system but you would still be around 30 if everything went perfect for you. At that time let's say you actually made it to MLB, how much value would you be to the team and what impact could you make. The bottom line is probably no impact and these teams are not going to spend the time and money to bring you along. That is the very reason they have the age limit set at 23, they want return on their investment if they are going to spend the time and money on a player.

I would scour the newspapers for open tryouts. I would also go to your town's minor league club and talk to the GM. I had some really good experiences in open tryouts with the Cincinnati Reds. I had trouble hitting breaking stuff but as far as playing first base, the scouts were somewhat impressed.

Hope that helps. Hope to see you in the show!
