I think Dickie Bird was the best. He was never known to be involved in any controversies, not that I know of anyway. And his great sense of humour earned him the respect and fame that he got. Also, of course, he did his job accurately too.
At the moment, I think Steve Bucknor is one of the best. During this world cup, I remember disagreeing with a couple of his LBW decisions, but still think he stands out compared to the rest. He has umpired in more test matches than any other umpire, and has also been the umpire for the last 5 world cup finals. That, I think reflects his high status in the game.
