If so is there a particular reason why he chose the name Joe Hill, some sort of hidden meaning or in-joke there perhaps?

Yes he is. His full name is Joseph Hillstrom King. He did not want to be known as "Stephen King's son who also writes" since his mother Tabitha (a novelist) is always known as "Stephen King's wife who also writes".

He also wanted to make it on his own. His own publisher and agent didn't know until recently who he is related to. With all that said, he knows he achieved success without using his father's coattails.
