It's not just a belief it's a fact that can be verified by simple observation. Consider how the MSM failed to follow up on all sorts of stories and leads that indicated Saddam did not have a nuclear program in 2002 and 2003. The media did not draw connections between the presence of neo conservative advisers who had long advocated a war against Iraq and the sudden rush to war. They didn't question the administration's claim that Saddam was not cooperating with nuclear inspections, when in fact, inspectors were there for the three or four months prior to the invasion and were begging the US for more time to complete their job.
Consider an average interview with an administration official or any Republican party mouthpiece. When they make false assertions of fact, or rewrite history, the journalists rarely challenge them. On TV talk shows, the MSM hosts often fail at their job of moderating. They allow the Republican blowhards to interrupt and hog the air time. When journalists act so contrary to their ethics and training, it's clear that they are reporting FOR instead of reporting ON Republican officials.
The same is likely true for corporations, but it's far more difficult to detect. Much of the deception is in the fact that certain corporate activities and deals which should be covered and exposed are NOT even mentioned.

The media is influenced by money. What is the avenue by which the money is achieved? It's called ratings. The "If it bleeds it leads" mentality runs rampant in the media. In the end though does it really matter if it is liberal or conservative? In my opinion the answer is no and I will give you 2 reasons why.
The first is that the media is not particularly honest anymore, no matter which side it represents. If you doubt this just critically examine the reporting in general. Then examine the response from the media when they make a mistake. They will spend days destroying the life of some poor schmuck, but let it turn out that this person committed no wrongdoing and you will barely hear mention of it at all.
The second is that we get what we pay for. If the media is biased one way or the other then we are all un-indicted co-conspirators because we eat it up and continue to give them those big ratings. If you don't want bias then you have to stand for truth and unfortunately this is the not the message we send as a people in general.

I believe the media is influenced by neither party--in the USA, sadly, the media is simply influenced by advertising revenue. The big story gets their attention, whether shows Democrats in a bad light (Monica Lewinsky), Republicans in a bad light (Cheney), or ignores significant stories altogether (who fathered Anna Nicole Smith's baby?)
HOWEVER--the advertising revenue is mainly important to the big corporations which own the media outlets. And the big corporations are mainly run by Republicans. So IF there is a political bias--based not on politics but on money--it would probably skew Republican.
To say the media has a liberal bias ignores the fact of who owns the media. Then again, some conservatives believe YouTube and Wikipedia--which are wholly informed by the people in general--have a liberal bias... so maybe the problem is that, to staunch conservatives, anyone who's not in agreement with them must have a "liberal bias."

The Main Stream Media no longer, for the most part, investigates things, and often just echoes the interests of government or corporations, because these views are stronger. The media gets access by reporting stories that powerful institutions want to get out, and the more access the reporter has, the more he is promoted.
There is also a general trend not to rock the boat. Why do expensive, investigative stories about the dangers of cars (unsafe at any speed), and instead run a story about how the latest Harry Potter raked in 140 million? In other words, why do stories that are critical of cars when you need car advertising?
Selling a wide variety of advertising makes conservatism easier. Also, the kind of mindless consumption that advertising desires is at odds with the intellectual character of liberalism. That is why most talk radio is on commercial stations and liberal radio is non-commercial NPR.
The end result is that Main Stream Media is weak, mindless and focused more on entertainment and shock value. Yes, they will love to show pictures of people getting blown up in Iraq - and this 'help's' the liberals, but the media is not doing it because it helps liberals, but because they like shock value. The Katrina story was also irresistible to them. By and large, however, the general weak character of the Main Stream Media helps the neo-cons and current batch of republicans since their success is largely based on lies, deceit and ignorance.

Republican conservatives have their grip on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh
Liberals get every other media outlet to include; The New York Times, CNN, and Jon Stewart
People seem to think these industries live on political motives, they live to make money and earn viewership. That's the great equalizers that is the benjamins
