Tectonics science is part of a greater domain called Geological Science. Tectonic plates are called continental plates and hence the movement has been named as continental drift. The convection current underneath the tectonic plates inside the oceans makes this movement possible. Therefore, the radiations under the earth is the fuel for such movements. The theory in general is called as Continental Drift only.

Look for Alred Weggener, the name of the guy who proposed first this theory. He said that continental plateaus move on the earth's mantel. Thus Africa "gets away" from South America since thousands of years at a rate of a few centimeters a year. Scientists surmise that there has been a begining during which all continents were reunited and surrounded by oceans. This erstwhile continent has been arbitrarily named "Pangea."
