There are many varieties of aquatic turtles. Mud and Musk turtles only reach a size of 4 to 5 inches, while the record for a snapper in captivity is close to 400 pounds. (Alligator Snapper, held in Louisiana) If you are considering a RES, they reach up to a 13 to 15 inch carapace. Most RES live into their late 30's. You will need a tank that provides them with enough water to swim around in, as well as a place to get out of the water and bask. You will need to provide them with UV light as well as it is essential to healthy shell development.

Red-ear Slider (RES) is the species, they are one of many kinds of water turtles.

An adult male RES is 9", the female is 12" generally. The size of the tank is supposed to be about 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length.

You can keep one adult RES in a really big tub, but for the most part, if you keep a couple or more, you need a pond or something usually.

The Painted Turtle, on the other hand, is a smaller species that is generally more attractive as an adult and overall easier to care for. It is not as easy to find at pet shops, but you'll save a ton of money in the long run just with the smaller tank sizes! Some species of Painteds barely hit 6" as adults, and even the big ones generally top off at about 8".

A good care site is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com or http://www.redearslider.com

Do some more research before you buy. The cost of a good set-up might scare you off! They can easily run $200.

Red ear sliders get on average around 10-12 inches. To comfortably house them you'll need at least a 75 gallon aquarium (that's if you go with standard aquarium sizes). Basically you need a really wide tank for them because they get so large.
