To solve this equation, you will be changing the form of the equation. That is, you want something that is set equal to zero so that you can factor.

First, distribute the x:
338=3x^2-13x.

Then, subtract 338 from both sides.
0=3x^2-13x-338.

Now, factor!
0=(x-13)(3x+26).

That means the solutions are
x=13 and x=-26/3.

Hope that helped!

338= 3x^2-13x
3x^2-13x-338=0 (Bring all terms on one side of the eq)
Multiply 338 by 3 (ans=1014) Make factors of 1014 the
the difference of which is 13. (26*39)

3x^2-39x+26x-338=0
3x(x-13)+26(x-13) =0
(x-13)(3x+26^ =0
either x-13=0
x=13

or 3x+26=0
3x =-26
x= -26/3

3x^2 - 13x - 338 = 0 ( x gets multiplied and shift 338 to the other side of the equation, so it becomes -338)

3x^2 - 39x + 26x -338 = 0 ( 3x^2 * -338 = -1014x^2)

( -39x*26 = -1014x^2)

(39-26 = 13)

3x (x-13) + 26 (x-13) = 0

(x-13) (3x+26) = 0

x=13 or 3x=-26 => x=-26/3

x=13 or x = -26/3

Your wrong, retro. You cant divide the 336 by 13, since the 13 has to divide the 3x^2 also.
So go back to 3x^2-13x-338 = 0. It factors nicely to ( 3x+26) * (x-13)

338 = 3x^2 - 13x
so, 3x^2 - 13x - 338 = 0

solving the quadratic equation

use the formulae x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2 -4ac)] / 2a

compare ax^2 +bx +c =0 with the equation given we get,
a = 3
b = -13
and c = -338

after substituting we get,

x = -26/3 OR x = 13

hope this helps!! :-)

Let me see:

338 = (3x-13)x

338= 3x**2-13x

0=3x**2-13x-338

(I have no idea how you got to what you are stuck on--sorry_)

factor:

0=(3x+26)(x-13)

(not easy to factor, especially at midnight)

x= -26/3, 13

by setting each factor equal to zero and solving for x

338 = (3x - 13)x
3x^2 - 13x - 338 = 0
3x^2 - 13x - 2*13*13 = 0
(3x - 26)(x + 13) = 0
x = - 13, 26/3

2007-07-17 03:08:16 · answer #7 · answered by Helmut 7 · 0 0

338 = (3x-13)x
3x^2 -13x - 338 = 0
(3x + 26)(x - 13) = 0

x= -26/3, 13
Thanks for everyone else figuring this out...!

Use the quadratic equation my brother.

The quadratic equation requires the format:

0 = ax^2 + bx + c

In your case this would be

0 = 3x^2 + (-13)x + (-338)

Next you can solve the quadratic equation by hand, or go to a website like this and just plug in A, B, and C

I don't know but I think you have to multiply 13x 3x something to equal 338 but I am not sure.
