On carpet, use baking soda. Sprinkle it on the spot and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes. Then vacuum it up.

You don't say specifically which pets or which odors bother you so I'll answer the main ones:
1. for cat litter box odors -- use a clay clumping litter (best is one box per cat per house), with a large uncovered pan and no liner. Scoop the box(es) twice a day if you can, but in any event at least once, and completely swap out the litter once a week for one box, once every two weeks for two boxes, etc. , thoroghly washing and drying the box. It also helps to use some plastic sheeting (I like 3M's masker tape for painters) underneath the boxes just in case the cats miss the box.
2. For accidents, use an odor neutralizer such as Nature's Miracle.
3. Wash bedding, blankets and other things pets regularly lie or sit on at least once a week. In between, a sticky roller brush designed for pet hair pick up really gets up the loose hair. Brushing your pet at least every other day (every day is better) also helps. Wash your pet as often as you are comfortable with -- anywhere between once a week to once a season helps. The internet has tips on how to do it.
4. Animals need their teeth professionally brushed at least twice a year. 3 or 4 times a year if you can afford it. Definitely not less than once a year.
5. Wash their dishes daily, as soon as possible after your animal has finished eating.
Basically, keep their stuff clean, the way you would with your own and that will help the smell.

This solution is so simple, you will not believe it. but I promise it works. I only know about dogs. I don't if it works for other pets. Dog odor comes from their ears. That black stuff that gets in their ears has a horrendous odor.
Go to Walmart buy a bottle of Australian Tea Tree Oil. You will find it in the vitamin section. Then get a small glass spray bottle from a hobby store. Mist their ears lightly about 1 time a week. You will never have dog odor again.

maybe you can buy something for your pet to smell better. you should also check where the odor is coming from your pet, so you'll know how to clean it. you can buy, pet soaps, or shampoo.^_^

You seem like some kind of clean freak to me (put the cat in the shower and hose her down, indeed). Are you sure you even belong to have pets?
