Often, when I'm in a dark room, I feel like there's a presence there. I don't think it's a psychological response - it's not like I'm "waiting" for someting to happen or even thinking about it when it does - and I'm wondering what the deal is. Have any of you felt something like this before, or know of a website that tries to explain this kind of thing (rather it's scientific or not)?

I know this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I'm pretty sure it's just you being paranoid. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I study the paranormal, and what you're experiencing is a very common thing.

Now if it only happens in certain specific locations, you may be onto something. But if it happens every time you're in the dark, it's just paranoia.

Do you ever wonder why you only feel that way in the dark? What is so special about dark situations? If you felt like you are being watched in a light situation then you'd look around and see you weren't . So, I think you feel that way in the dark because you aren't able to verify that there is nothing looking at you. It is a psychological response in that you are fearful of an area you aren't fully aware of. You don't know what's there so you fear the possibility. This isn't an unhealthy response either. Perhaps there is some evolutionary benefit to humans to feel this way and perhaps not. Either way it's better to be safe than sorry so you feel uneasy when you're in a situation you don't have full control of.

Whenever there is darkness, your senses other than sight are amplified, including your hearing. If you have really super hearing, you will pick up many different sounds - Rudyard Kipling once referred to this as being able to hear a wasp walk on a windowpane. There may or may not be something there, but the point is that you're usually better able to tell if there is with those kinds of conditions.

It's quite common to be scared of the dark - not only for children, but for some adults too. That's why ghost stories and similar are often set in dark surroundings. It's much easier to imagine scary things if there's not enough light to see properly.

It's not Spiritual, it is purely psychological. Maybe a feeling of paranoia or maybe, thinking that someone is stilli n the room, but they actually are not.

If it's just any room at random then there is nothing paranormal about it.

If there were something following you, you would feel in lighted places as well.

now humans typically do not enjoy being in situations in which they are not in control of their surrounds, in other words situations in which they are vulnerable. When you are in a dark room, you obviously can’t see the other areas of the room which means that an enemy, a predator (as our ancestors for the past 100,000 years have faced) would be easily concealed

Wow, a question directed towards me! I'm flattered.

I agree with tsr's and Joe's answers, and micah presents an interesting answer from an evolutionary perspective. Not much else to add.
