The prophecy mentioned that the one with the power to defeat Voldemort would be born to parents who had already defied him three times. Obviously, both sides like to know who the competition is. The Order of the Phoenix learns who Death Eaters are; Voldemort learns who are members of the Order. So it wouldn't be hard, then, for Voldemort to narrow it down to Harry and Neville. And then, as Dumbledore told Harry, Voldemort CHOSE Harry by coming to "mark him as his equal."
So, in short, he went to the Potters, because other hints were given in the prophecy that referred to them; Voldemort already knew of them because they were actively fighting against him.

The prophecy gives Voldemort a very good idea who to look for, and that's Neville and Harry. Of the students in Harry's year, only we only know the birth date of five. Everyone else we just know birth year. These five are Harry (July 31, 1980), Ron (March 1, 1980), Hermione (September 19, 1979, since you apparently have to already be eleven to start at hogwarts she had to wait until she was a few weeks from turning twelve), Neville (July 30, 1980), and Malfoy (June 5, 1980). The second line of the prophecy narrows it down to Harry and Neville. "Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies." Note that the line ends with "born as the the seventh month dies." July is the seventh month of the year, and the last few days in July would be dieing days of July. This could have been anyone, but the first part of this sentence tells us that they had to be born to parent's who had defied Voldemort three times. The Longbottoms and the Potters both fit. Voldemort's spies could easily tell him both were expecting a child and then when that child was born. Since the prophecy says Voldemort would "mark him as his equal" (which pretty much says it has to be a boy) it was therefore up to Voldemort to choose between Harry and Neville.

Because there was only one other person that fit the requirements of the prophecy, and that was Neville Longbottom, but Voldemort chose Harry because he felt more of a threat from him. If you read the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it explains a lot. Basically, Dumbledore explained to Harry that Voldemort could have ignored the prophecy altogether, but he didn't because he didn't want anyone to interfere with his plans of becoming a powerful wizard.

He went after the half blood child of people who had been fighting against him and escaped, and the only half blood child that had been born at the end of july.( Voldemort's father was a muggle and his mother a witch so he's a half blood too) Neville was born at the end of july too, on july 30th so Voldemort chose the one that was born last.
