It takes about two to three days depending on the route you take, how fast you drive, and on how many stops you take.
Each time I drove out there, I took three days to get there. Getting back, we did it in two as we took turns driving pretty much most of the trip w/o resting overnight. We usually went across I-40, but have also done I-80/I90 as well.
As for flying, it takes about 5-6 hours depending on where in California you're going, which direction you're flying, and what time of year you're flying due to shifts in the wind! :-)
Hope that helps!

Drive? A long, long time. I drove from New Mexico to Boston in 5 days. Add another day coming from California I suppose, or just drive longer.
To fly, it's about a 6 hour flight, plus the time difference.

Flying direct is around 5 hours from CA to Boston, and 6 hours from Boston to CA (due to wind). JetBlue has a number of nonstop flights out of Boston to Oakland, San Francisco, Long Beach and Sacramento. United Airlines also flies from Boston to San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) pretty frequently.

Driving would depend on the route you take, and how often you stop and for how long. I'd say at least 3 days, but probably more with other factors coming in to play. The flight is in between 5 and 6 hours, if you can find a direct flight.
