Another semester is about to begin and once again I am applying for scholarships financial aid to pay for the exorbitant tuition and book fees. Everytime I do a scholarship or grant search it always kind of gets under my skin that there are NUMEROUS opportunities available to ONLY one race/ethnicity or another...and nothing directed exclusively for mine. I don't mean to be whining. I truly feel like I'm being slighted and like I'm the victim of a societal double standard. What do you think? Am I alone on this? What do you think can possibly be done to make scholarship/grant opportunites available for everyone to qualify for?

mistakes happen arseholes. I didn't realize perfect grammatics and punctuation were a requirement on yahoo answers. How about actually providing a quality answer to the question instead of nit-picking minor details like an 'e' instead of an 'i'. Just a suggestion.

To the muslim woman: Yes, I think you will be able to find a job. However, I would not expect employers to change their work standards for you (or anyone else). I completely understand that the immigration process in this country is rediculous as my fiance is from Argentina and has paid thousands of dollars and waited many years to get citizenship, while the Cubans get to touch foot and are homefree. Anyway, I promise you that there are far more grants and scholarships directed exclusively to you than there are exclusively directed to me (solely based on race and ethnicity). I guess my entire point with this question is that scholarships and grants should be awarded due to academic standards and not race or ethnicity.

I'm far from a suburbanite or a rat. And once again, it's 2:25 in the morning and I'm not about to proofread this like I would an exam paper. Next.

Fret- that is the best answer so far. Thanks. :)
Unspoken- I'm an not asking for ANY handouts whatsoever. And I did not mean to imply that in any way. Believe it or not I have my own sob stories of hardships and hard work as well, (of course I won't bore you with those very personal details). It is a FACT that two semesters ago my state funded school had more scholarships available to minorities than it did to actual scholars. That, in my opinion, is a problem.

Quality...it's sad people like you think you are owed something by people 'like me'. And just how is it 'karma'? I never owned any slaves, and I'm actually marrying a minority.

hmmmmm......welcome to America.......land of opportunity for anyone not American or White. Sad but true that we cannot take care of our own.....but, you are a woman (and a hot one at that) so there are more, albiet few, opportunities for you than there were for me. the worst thing you cam be in this country when applying for any kind of assistance is white and male. nothing we can do to change it at this point I'm afraid.....all the bleeding heart liberals and illegals who feel they are owed something and the biggest offender of all, the ACLU have made it a country where all you have to do to get ahead is not be born here and/or not be white......and I'm not a racist, just stating a blatent fact that nobody will stand up and say for fear of the reprisals that come with it.....I ended up paying over 150K for a BS in aviation mgt while black and mexican and middle eastern students in the same program I was in had it funded all or in most part by my tax dollars.....I wish you all the luck in the world in your education and wish there was something I could say to help you, but sadly that's just the state of the country and it's only going to get worse.

Read my story and see if you have it bad.
I came to the States 6 years ago and after marriage and two kids I decided to go back to school, guess what ? my bachelor degree and work experience from the old country doesn't count.
OK so how about some grant help they said I'm eligible so I spent 6 hours filling paper work ,dressed my kids, took tow buses went there to apply and the lady took one look at me with my Islamic Vail and said that the two forms of ID I have are not enough?? and sent me home, even the dean's office told me it's not fair and she's wrong but they can't do anything about it I just have to bring more forms of Id's!
I have a green card and going to be a citizen next year , I also should get my degree in four years, you think any one will hire a Muslim woman?

Yes it's discrimination.. it's giving favor to one group... and every scholarship and every grant is guilty of discriminating... they discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, income/need, academic achievement, area of study and any combination of the above listed... in life you have to work for everything you get including scholarships and grants... wouldnt it be nice if they just fell into our laps?... thats not the case however... there are scholarships and grants out there for everyone... the real question you should be asking yourself is how much do you want them?... you're gonna have to really roll up your sleeves and find the ones that apply to you... they are there but it's gonna take some work to find them.... I've been in school for more than 8 years now and I've funded my education through scholarships, grants, loans and through my own wallet.... scholarships and grants have only been small contributors but all have been based on my grades, financial need and area of study... I'm a hispanic female and I've never received a scholarship simply because I belonged to a minority group... my surname is not hispanic so there was no way that they could have known i was a minority... there are so many scholarships and grants out there... some for everyone... a little bit more work and a little less whining and you'll find them... best of luck.
It's all in the way you word it Savvy... in your original post you failed to mention that you were upset bc funding wasnt based on acadmics.. you only mentioned race and ethnicity... u said that you were upset bc "NUMEROUS opportunities available to one race/ethnicity or another... and nothing directed exlusively for mine"... I agree with you that more funding should be based on academic merit and not by any other criteria but as I said that was not your initial argument... then again if all scholarships were based on academics then where would that leave those individuals who work hard but just cant seem to make the grades to qualify?... I sympathize Savvy and am not trying to be cruel but only stating the obvious... going to school is expensive and finding the money to do it when you arent blessed with wealth is a real hardship... instead of everyone here bickering about who its harder for in terms of race/ethnicity we should bring light to the real issue... something should be done to make higher education more affordable... the prices of tuition these days are just ridiculous... and as for fret ...well fret not bc u still have more privileges being male and white than anyone else here in the US

I am all for grants for other ethnicities to help them overcome the "not quite equal" economy and workplace. But I think that you should be able to qualify for a lower income tuition, if you have less than a certain amount of money, and youre parents do as well. I think they only give these low income grants if you have really good grades, which would mean I wouldnt have qualified for anything either. I dont believe its discrimination. It is a sad but true fact that white people are still able to get work, loans, etc. easier than other ethnicities.

Wouldn't it be nice if scholarships were awarded based on scholastic excellence, or demonstration of excellence in a given area of study?
Unfortunately, not all are. Yes, I think it's discriminatory. I don't believe a person should be given OR DENIED an opportunity of any kind based on their race, ethnicity, or anything except raw talent and proven intent to work their tail end off to excel at what they do.

Welcome to real world. Now get to about 1 or 2 Black people and sit down. Ask them just how many times to your one, have they been discriminated against.
Then you'll have the answer to your own question. Do your own research and dig a little deeper, you know? I agree with Marty_Moe's answer no matter how much you hate it. Whites are seeing that what comes around goes around.
Karma is a beyotch isn't it? Get used to it because the way the world is headed, things will get worse before getting any better, and sadly worse for folks like you.

When people award money as a gift, they get to choose the criteria recipients must meet. Remember, that's private money. Keep looking- there's something for almost everyone. Oh, and good luck!

It is too true, the scholarships all seem to be directed to this minority, or that ethnicity. And even if they are open it seems like the ethnicities get it anyway. But there has to be something out there - keep searching, I guess that is all you can do. IF that even helps any

Scholarships are meant to be for the smart and disadvantaged, so they must be assuming that minorities are more disadvantaged than your type.
