There were lots of them.

Fear of war with the Soviet Union and nuclear annihilation were certainly top of mind. After WWII American politicians were absolutely consumed with the spread of communism in the world, and the ability of the Soviet Union to wage war against the US. There are many examples of this conflict, but probably the the one that portrays it the most clearly is the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963.

The "space race" is also a good example of the fears of middle America. The thought that another country, particularly the USSR could surpass the US technologically was very unsettling. The US (and the Soviets for that matter) poured billions into one upping each other. Like all good races, as tense as it may have seemed at the time, it led to a huge leap in technological innovation.

A third fear of middle America was integration of blacks into the mainstream of society. The civil rights movement in the US was disturbing to a large portion of white society. Many whites fled the cities, pulled their children out of integrated schools and hid out in the suburbs. The divisions and fears of the civil rights movement in the US are ongoing and self evident
