Although those in the newtonian world might have a quick answer for you, consider this...ALL the mystic traditions have actively taught forms of meditation that involve de-focusing the eyes and looking with soft focus at objects, specific areas, or even candle flames. Why ? To begin accessing the actual reality behind the obvious - the mundane world. There are those disciplines that would say you ae witnessing the building blocks of the world and all that is in it !

Yes. When you stare unfocused, particularly when you are looking into a blank light field (such as at an overcast sky or a white wall), you can see an image of the red blood cells moving one by one through the capillaries of your eye, enormously magnified. They look like little prismatic shooting-stars. With practice you can see them under most any conditions. People also see them when they stand up too quickly & such.

I've also noticed that when I stare unfocused, the image I see appears very finely grainy, with a grain that 'dances' slightly sort of like a TV screen. I think it's just a result of the way our imperfect visual system makes an image from light - it's not perfect like a mirror; the system is flesh. I also think it's really cool when you shine a laser pointer into the dark and unfocus your eyes at the laser dot ... it appears to bring out this "texture" that I'm talking about, and it's fascinating.

Auras and ether ... well, if you like. I don't speak in those terms because I can't define them.

I see some dots that fly around the edges of my vision when I unfocus my eyes. But, I have really bad eyesight and everything looks like it's made of dots all the time anyway.

They're floaters. Usually happens when looking at a plain backdrop. It's normal and harmless.
