It's a long and sad story. I don't want to say to much as it would ruin their integrity and reputations. Lets just say, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, attempted suicide and abandonment had something to do with it.

His parents received two pairs of genes from their father and mother. One of the pair, from each parents, gets passed on to him. One of those in the pair, gets shown up in the phenotype. So genetically that's how Spongebob got his square shape, this probably came from his parents.
Though really, the bigger and real question, is household sponge products can't reproduce so how does Spongebob Squarepants live or have parents?

The chromosomes for square sponges are recessive....
His parents both had genes for round and square sponginess, but because round was dominant, that's what their phenotype is.
So..... Spongebob is square because the recessive square gene prevailed.

It's kinda like that toy that little kids play with, and little kids most of the time try to put the square peg in the round hole: it just doesn't make sense. That's primarily the gag being referred to there. I think it's hillarious.

Because the sponges age like humans. When his parents were manufactured in the sponge factory, they were fresh but age and wear and tear took a toll on the young couple, leaving them frayed and worn at the edges.

Deep, deep question... Maybe his parents are heterozygous for the "round, square gene" and round is dominant...
