The very first tip/advice is to have at
least six (6) months salary in the bank
incase of emergency. the next tip/advice
Don't go overboard buying furniture, buy
cheap until you are settled in there awhile,
(if you lose the Apartment, what do you do
with all that expensive furniture ?) storage ?
bad idea. Wait until you are on you job, at
least a year (permanent, not temporary)
all I can think of for now. GOOD LUCK
When I started I was First (lol)

Hey I'm getting ready to move out on my own too. Here are all the things I can think of:

SAFETY:
keep all your doors and windows locked, even if you are home. Never keep a key hidden anywhere outside incase you lock yourself out. Always be on the lookout for suspicious activities in the area and get to know your neighbors. Make sure you keep the outside area of your apartment lit when you're on your way in/out. Make sure you have a WORKING smoke detector. Carry mace or pepper spray!

FINANCES:
Always keep at least 3 months' pay saved incase of emergencies. DO NOT spend this money unless it is an ACTUAL emergency. Don't get wrapped up in getting cash advances... you never get out of that habit. Also try not to have a credit card, unless it's strictly for emergencies! Never spend more than you make. The dollar store is a great place to buy toiletries, general food items (cereal, coffee, bread milk and etc), and cleaning supplies. Each month, make a list of bills that need paid and check them off as you pay them. Make sure (if you're going to mail your bills) you send them at least a week before they're due... mail is slow sometimes. If you'll have a checking account, balance your checkbook REGULARLY so you know where you stand.

OTHER:
Make sure others know you're moving out for the first time, they might have some furniture or appliances they'd part with free. Used shops are fine places to look for this kind of thing. If you see a gently used couch, chair or otherwise, rememeber it can always be covered with a slip cover and there you go a new piece of furniture.

LASTLY:
ENJOY your new freedom of your own rules!!
I hope all goes well and this helped! Good luck!

1) PAY YOUR BILLS ON TIME.

2) Do NOT spend more than you make. Don't use credit, it's SOOOOOOOOOO easy to become overextended. It happens ALL the time, even to smart people! Live within your means, even if that means doing with less or having a roommate.

3) Fix up your apartment -- don't hesitate because it's not yours or it's just 'temporary.' You don't have to spend a lot of money -- be creative, use paint (if allowed). But fix it up nice so you will be really comfortable and happy there.

4) Enjoy!!

I used to be an apartment manager...this is my advise...make sure you get a full move in inspection of anything/everything wrong with the apartment, do a walk thru with management, check everything; holes in doors, dings in appliances, knicks in floors or on counters, stains in carpet. ect...make sure you and management sign it and get a copy. make sure you save it for when you move out. They will charge you for anything/everything wrong if you don't have one.

Other than that...if you are going to live alone, try to get a top floor so you don't have to worry about somebody breaking in through a window. And make sure that you have maise...baseball bad or some other means of protection.

Have a blast, one day you will cherish this time for sure!

Congrats!

When you furnish your apartment, don't be afraid to go to yard sales and thrift stores for furniture and furnishings... there are some real gems to be found out there, and it's cheaper to go that route and rent a Rug Doctor than spend way more than you have to on brand new furnishings.

And one thing to remember --- less is more! The less furnishings you have, the less clutter to worry about and less stuff to clean (both meaning more money for bills and your savings account -- if you don't have one, I recommend INGdirect.com!), and also it really brings the attentions of guests to the really nice little things that you DO have in your house. Good luck and congratulations!

First of all is ... be safe! Keep your doors locked - even when you are home! Get to know your neighbors, they will help you! Call your mom every few days to let her know that you are safe. Make sure that you have a small kit of tools like screwdrivers, a flashlight, small nails and extra batteries. One more thing ... if you have a family member nearby or a trusted friend, leave extra keys to your apartment and car with them.

Concerning safety? Decorating? Not sure what exactly you want tips on, but since it is an apt you may want to get some wood sticks for the windows, to put in when you are not at home, to help cut down on break ins etc. I live in an apt also, my third one in ten years and that is just a little safety thing.

First of all, try finding one on http://www.hubbuzz.com.
This site gives you details about the apartment, neighborhood, activities, etc.
Also, I'm sure that you're on a budget considering this is your first apartment so you can also search by price range.
I'm just starting out too and I found an apartment on the site. Hubbuzz also gave me $100 just because I found an apartment on their site!
