You are probably right about the rest of the babies, mortality rate for commercial RES babies is about 80%. I can't say I "own" any RES, but I have worked with Reptile Rescue for several years, and many RES are living out their lifespans in my pond. I have 3 females in their 30's, and a male and female siblings who are 5 years old now. All are rescues. They share the pond with an adult male Map Turtle and an African Side-Neck female. I have a 120 gal tank set up in the house with several baby RES, a 3 year old Map, an Eastern Painted Shell, a female Mud Turtle and a young male Musk Turtle. There is also an African Side-neck rescued from a PetSmart who has lost an eye. She is in with the babies because of her extremely limited visual acuity. She hunts feeder fish as well as the others, however, and I have never seen her miss a meal!!!!

The oldest Red-ear Slider in captivity with good documentation was 22 years in a zoo. Many good keepers are claiming 40+ years, and are probably right, but they lack the proper documentation to prove the claims scientifically.
The store you got the turtles at probably tosses out about 50% of all the turtles it buys- that is an average 'loss' for this species.
The store was also in violation of a federal regulation that forbids the sale of turtles under 4" long as pets. If they ignored a federal regulation put in place to protect them and you, you can only imagine how much they really care for the turtles.
You have probably been there already, but two good care sites for this species are

Owned a total of 10 RES in which 3 had passed away. Currently had 7 of them as my soul companion. The oldest is turning 5 this August. My 2nd Res is 41/2, the 3rd & 4th turns 4 in april this year, the 5th & 6th are turning 3 coming september and ranked 7th Res will turn 1 this coming x'mas eve. Phew... It took me quite a while to remember all their bdays but they are my pride. THeir sizes really varies alot but all of them get along happily, of course, the number 7 still lives alone cos' it's too small in size to stay with the others. Thank you...

my sister had two, but i classify them mine because i take care of them all the time, and then she killed one when she changed the water and didn't put the water cleaner in there.....it killed 4 gold fish, a sucker fish, and one turtle....but the one is about 5 months old......
