It is definitely better to get a desktop. the specs on a laptop are slower than a desktop for the same price. this is an example of what i configured in dell:

Dell Dimension 531:
AMD Athlon X2 5600+
19" Flat Panel WIDESCREEN
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 at 667 MHz
250GB SATA
256MB NVIDIA 8600GT GDDR3 PCI-E 16
16x DVDRW and 48xCDRW/DVDROM
Sound Blaster X-FI 7.1

$1189

For the same price:
Dell Inspiron 1520
Intel Core 2 Duo T7100
Vista Home Premium
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 667
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS PCIE
8x DVDRW
160GB SATA
Intel Next-Gen Wireless
Integrated Audio
$1188

A desktop is most likely well worth it, but if you want gaming on the go, you may go for a laptop, but expect low battery life while gaming.

I would say a desktop
1) within 3 months you will want to expand its cheaper to
buy upgrades for desktops
2) a laptop is not robust enough for playing games the key board will not stand up
3) yes you can carry laptops around but how often?
spend what you save on new Games

Depends on what you want. Desktop for easier upgrade and its more stable. But if you want to move around and play definitely get a laptop.

desktop hands down don't even think of getting a laptop if you wanna play anything more than simcity 3000 oh and make sure it has at least 1000 mbs of ram 100 gb HDD 3 mgz processor and 50 megs of video memory anything less than that and you'll waste your money because you'll find most games wont play

Desktop for expandability. You can upgrade it that way. You cannot upgrade a laptop too easily.
