You are making a great choice. I lived in Bali for 7 years and Candidasa is one of my favorite place to visit. To drive there is also an amazing experience. Make sure you visit : Bali's mother temple, Pura Besakih, Tenganan (the aboriginal people of Bali) and maybe take a ferry Lombok. Besides that take a trip to Lovina, Lembongan, Ubud on a further side. You have got to explore Bali and easy trips are not worth it. You can even take a bus to Legian, Nusa Dua and your trip to Bali will be complete. The bus company called Perama, and it's all over Bali. Have Fun !

Bali has so much to offer and it really depends what you are after. Bali literally caters for the adventurous kind, the rest and relaxation type and also the touristy sight-seeing type.
If it is your first time there are a couple of must-sees & must do's (tourist trap or not it's still beautiful)
1) Kecak Dance at Uluwatu as the sunsets in the horizon
2) Ubud - the cultural heart of Bali (Ubud Markets, the Monkey Forest, Elephant Caves) There are several art galleries to be seen here, temples to be visited as well as souvenier shopping. Shopping here is generally cheaper than other places.
3) Kuta - definitely a tourist trap but a visit there is a must to see how life is and how packed it can get. That is where the nightlife is as well. Visit the clubs on the main street. You should be able to snag a few good deals there if you're looking for some shopping treats
4) Seminyak - the more chic area of Bali with the most expensive clubs such as KuDeTa. Other restaurants and again..shopping
Outer Bali
1) Have lunch overlooking Mount Batur
2) Tanah Lot - that infamous Hindu temple perched on the rocks in the sea
3) Bedegul
Or if you're interested in diving...and white sandy beaches and pure paradise..Lombok. There are several deals on the Internet as well as when you get to Bali, it's not a problem to arrange such tours etc.
Hope this gives you somewhat of a guide.

There is a little town called Ubud that is an artist community and it is absolutely gorgeous. Great shopping and beautiful scenery. many Temples in town to visit. Stay there for 1 or 2 nights. Then go out to the Island of Nusa Lembognan. No cars allowed on the island and it has the feel of Bali 30 years ago. Good surf and diving and very inexpensive. However there are expensive hotels there if that is what you feel like.
Kuta and Legian have been turned into huge tourist traps. I counted one day and was hit up 38 times in one block for Massage's, transport, sunglasses and clothing. Thats just one block!!! So get away from the rat race and try these places. You won't regret it.
You have limited time in Bali. Go straight to the good places. In my opinion, you don't have time to explore.

Bali is not that big island so you can go around within a few hours of driving.
Candidasa is in the other side of the island of Bali (don't expecting the nice sandy beaches around Candidasa!). And it's quite not a good base camp if you want to go around. But,
close to candidasa you can drive up to Amed.
Amed- on the coast, quiet, lovely beaches, good area for diving, snorkelling or just relaxing. Great restaurant at Hotel Indra Udhyana.
Kintamani - well worth the trip. The buffet lunch at the Lakeview Restaurant is expensive by Bali standards at $6 US and not particularly good but they have the location and what a location it is.
Pura Bekasih (Besakih Temple) the mother temple.
Ubud and enjoy the dance performances at the Palace 15,000Rp.
Kecak Fire Dance at Padang Tegal, Jalan Raya. 15,000Rp
Casa Luna cookery class in Janet De Neefe's garden, Jalan Bisma, 80,000 Rp.
Lovina Beach - you can catch the dolfin early in the morning.
Amuk bay and Pasir putih beach. Located in the village of Perasi. Access point is a gap between a row of buildings, on the main road between Candi Dasa and Amlapura. There is a small sign indicating a beach, but its easy to miss
Ulu Watu is a small temple perched on the edge of towering cliffs. It is renowned for it's sunsets and inhabited by aggressive monkeys. There you can go to Dreamland beach - and have a nice seafood dinner on the beach along Jimbaran area.
Kuta in addition to being the Sunset Site Number One, with its daily spectacular sunsets, it is also the centre of night life activities in Southern Bali and a shopping mecca. The beach of Kuta is one of the first favorite beaches discovered by tourist.

You need to bring a lot of things to California but here are some major things to bring: 1. For sure bring a bathing suit and beach things because you'll probably spend a lot of time there. 2. Your clothes and everyday necessities 3. Sunglasses, sunscreen, hats and other things to protect you from the sun because it's very hot there. 4. Money, if you can because they have AMAZING stores and shopping centers. 5. Walking shoes because if you don't have a car then you'll be doing a lot of that lol (: You can also, take a lot of other things but these mainly. Hope I helped :DDDDD Have fun on your Trip !
